Solid Oak Flooring
Solid oak flooring is a natural wood floor usually between 10-25mm thick. Unlike engineered or veneered floors, solid oak doesn't involve 'layers' of different wood, it is oak throughout. The floor is long lasting, warm, visually stunning and easy to maintain. This type of flooring is the best quality and usually at the upper end of one's shopping budget so remember this before your eyes pop out whilst browsing.

Engineered Oak Flooring
Engineered Oak is in essence layers of wood with an Oak or Real Wood top layer. These layers are compressed together with the real wood as the top layer. This allows alternative materials to be placed underneath the 'veneer' layer making engineered oak more affordable than solid oak. This also allows for more flexibility and a greater range of designs due to the fact that this type of flooring can be manufactured.

Oak Flooring Underlay
Choosing the right underlay for your floor can be a difficult and important decision. There are a range of variables you must take into consideration such as flatness of the subfloor, is the sub-floor floating or solid, does it need sound insulation, is it suitable with underfloor heating, is it smooth enough and will it require a damp proof membrane. B&Q, Wickes and UK Flooring Direct (UKFD) all offer an excellent range of underlays for your floors, UKFD in particular offer some high quality, high end underlays. Browse: Underlays
Wooden Floor Fitting Kits
When you do decide to choose a wooden floor, (a wise decision may we add) you'll need some equipment to get you started. There are several fitting kits available for solid wood flooring. These kits usually include spacers, a knocking block and a pull bar used for pulling planks together. These kits are very inexpensive and are a useful addition for people installing floors for the first time. Browse: Fitting Kits
B & Q Solid Oak & Engineered Oak Flooring
B & Q have an excellent range of engineered & solid oak floors. Their RealwoodLOC system provides a simple and easy to install locking mechanism which is very similar to their laminate floors. The LOC products are available in different grades. Select grade is a phrase given to a very high quality oak cut from the centre of a tree with a limited number available per batch (hence 'Select'). This reduces colour difference and your floor appears uniform.

I've Selected My Oak Floor - How Many Packs Do I Need?
Each pack of oak flooring is usually sold in either one strip or three strip planks. Each pack will cover a certain square metreage (coverage) of floor. It's important when measuring your floor that you include an extra 10% allowance for planks which will be cut to fit and the leftover product not needed. This is called wastage, and without it a problem could arise when you come to the end of your installation and you run out of product. More advanced DIYers can usually install to 3-5% wastage, however it's generally recommended for average DIYers to buy at 10%. We have a calculator built into our site which will look at each product's coverage, and work out the price of the floor PLUS this 10% wastage figure. This allows customers to input their room dimensions (say 3m x 5m) and all the products will be displayed by Number of Packs Required and Total Price. If you have any comments or issues using the calculator please don't hesitate to contact us and we can run through it with you. Should you wish to de-active 'calculator mode' you can press the clear button any time at the top of the screen. When in calculator mode, ALL products will be displayed differently so please bear this in mind.
Varying Plank Lengths
If you are browsing products and are not sure why the length isn't present, then this is because the plank length is variable. Our system doesn't account for plank length, it works on the square metre coverage. We've tried to include as much information as possible, however plank lengths can often be difficult to describe, and are often written as 1200mm - 1800mm.
Some Prices On This Site Are Different To Suppliers .... Why?
To make it easier for our customers buying flooring, we like to prioritise cost per square metre over pack price. This gives browsers more of an idea how much their floor will cost - pack price isn't really the most useful thing in this case. There may also be the issue of certain suppliers displaying excluding VAT prices on their websites. For residential/domestic usage this is normally confusing or misleading when you get to the checkout. We like to INCLUDE VAT on all products so you can get as near to finalised price as possible. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide delivery costs at this time as it's a complicated mix of weight, volume, scheduled deliveries and geographic coverage.
We hope you enjoy using our site and it helps you find your oak floor quickly and easily. If you have any feedback we'd always like to hear it, you can email us here at info@oakflooring.org.uk. Thank You :)
